Carol Taylor’s Bequest to the Okanagan Library on Gender Diversity, Reproductive Choice and Sexual Health Books for Youth

Carol Taylor’s Bequest to the Okanagan Library on Gender Diversity, Reproductive Choice and Sexual Health Books for Youth – Now Available

The Okanagan Regional Library (ORL) has received several new incredible, informational and educational books for youth thanks to a bequest from Carol Taylor via the Kelowna Atheists, Skeptics and Humanists Association (KASHA).

Carol Taylor was a former Kelowna nurse and music teacher, and a passionate advocate for sex education, reproductive choice, LGBTQ rights and secularism. As a member of KASHA, Carol had bequeathed funds for KASHA to promote humanistic and critical thinking before her medically assisted death in January of 2020.

The KASHA board in the spring decided to donate funds to the library to purchase books for youth in keeping with Carol’s passion for empowering young people with scientifically based knowledge and history. Gaining knowledge of human gender diversity, reproductive choice and sexual health allows young people to become better friends and partners, and engage as citizens in a more inclusive society.

KASHA president Nina George contacted Ashley Machum, Head of Youth Services at the Okanagan Regional Library about purchasing books with a monetary donation. KASHA had created a list of books that had been researched by Zena Ryder. The ORL selected some books from the list and expanded the titles chosen based on informational needs throughout the library system.

Nina George was pleased with the book selection made by the ORL which included the topics of endometriosis for teens, reproductive rights, puberty, and gender diversity.

KASHA is proud to empower youth with these books that are now available in the Okanagan Regional Library system.
